Seeking volunteers for British Field Day PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jim Henderson
Thursday, July 08 2010 00:00
We are looking for volunteers to help man the British Field Day event coming up on Saturday, 17 July (see attached flyer).  The sponsors are donating the proceeds of the event to the Salt Lake Community Network (which ELPCO is part of) and this will help towards our remaining outstanding debt for the Tree Fund (trees planted on 700 East median).  Volunteers will be asked to help with such tasks as ticket admission, car registration, and timed trials.  Even if you are able to spare only an hour, this will greatly be appreciated.  Otherwise, please come and support the event!  If you are interested please contact Marielle.

Call for Gardens PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jim Henderson

In December of 2009, the City Council adopted the 2009 Five-year Water Conservation Master Plan, which includes a program measure to convert the Salt Lake City Water-wise Plant List into an interactive web-based database. In April we were awarded a grant from the Bureau of Reclamation for the development of the database and website, and have contracted with GardenSoft to assist in the process.

Which leads to the purpose of this email…we are conducting a search for beautiful gardens with water-wise components… some great water-wise plants, fabulous patios, smart irrigation systems, anything that makes it sensible as well as beautiful; gardens that will inspire and demonstrate that a landscape can be “green” without using too much “blue”…

So, the formal criteria:   We are looking for gardens or garden components to photograph that:
  1. are (ideally) within Salt Lake City Public Utilities service area (which includes SLC, Millcreek, Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, and portions of Murray and South SL);
  2. demonstrate some level of water efficiency or that have some plants that reflect a water-wise palette;
  3. and that are beautiful.

These properties can be residential, commercial, or public landscapes. The database will be divided into a number of categories, including whole garden tours, side yards, parkstrips, patios, and veggie gardens. There will even be categories for structures such as fences, gates, pergolas, and walls.

If you have created any gardens like this, or have one of your own, or maybe have seen one in your neighborhood or as you have traveled about, please let me know. We plan to photograph gardens next week so don’t delay! Act with haste!

Also, reach out to any landscape or irrigation professionals you might know, including LAs, landscape contractors, irrigation folk who might have a lead on beautiful water-wise gardens.

Please help us create a fabulous landscape database for our community.

Kind Regards,

Proposed New Striping Plan for 900 S Between 700 E and Windsor St. (Updated) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jim Henderson

The following comes from Becka Roolf in the Salt Lake City Transportation Division.  The proposal referenced is also attached to this posting.

ELPCO is planning to have discussion on this topic in the June meeting following the Waterwise discussion that was previously scheduled.

Attached please find a proposal from the Salt Lake City Transportation Division for a new striping pattern for 900 South between 700 East and Windsor St. (860 East).  As you undoubtedly know, this road is currently being reconstructed.

When this project is complete, in about a month, the Transportation Division is considering a new configuration as a three-lane road (one lane in each direction, plus a center turn lane) with bike lanes.  900 South already carries only one lane through the 9th & 9th intersection, and traffic volumes are very compatible with a three-lane road.

I believe that you have a community council meeting next Thursday, June 24, and I hope you can share this information about the project at this meeting.  I would welcome any feedback that you or other members of the community may have either before or after your meeting.

Unfortunately, I will be unavailable to make a presentation at that meeting as I will be out of town next week. However, I would be happy to answer any advance questions you may have on the project.  Should you by chance have significant questions/concerns such that you would like a representative of the Transportation Division to present at the community council meeting, please let me know by this Friday so that I can arrange it.

Salt Lake City Transportation Division will be circulating this proposal as a flyer door-to-door to residents and businesses along the street.

UPDATE from Becka (6/17/2010):

First, we apologize that we will not be able to send a representative to the meeting due to other commitments.  We will send a large-format striping drawing and some handouts in lieu of a presentation, and would welcome any comments.

Second, as indicated in the flyer, please send comments or questions to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  There are other staff on the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it distribution list who should also see the comments.

SLCC Community Writing Center Events PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jim Henderson
Wednesday, March 03 2010 22:44

We received the following information at the meeting on February 28 from Ken Simin, the partnerships coordinator with the SLCC Community Writing Center:

The SLCC Community Writing Center (CWC) is partnering with the SLC Library to promote civic engagement, specifically through writing.  We are asking the public to write letters to public officials of their choice on a matter that concerns them (we will assist in locating the relevant officials).  The Writing for Change events will be held at the various city library branches.  The next event is March 16 at the Sprague Branch Library.

Since the CWC is state funded, we can’t dictate specific topics.  Instead, we are contacting agencies that better know the issues that directly affect their clients and/or participants and, as a result, could encourage them to use their “voice” via the pen.

For more information about the CWC and this specific event on March 16, please see:
