Thank you to all who attended the first meeting in 2012 of the East Liberty Park Community Organization! For those who couldn't make it this month, here's what you missed:

Joyce Valdez, Mayor Becker's liaison, expressed the Mayor's appreciation for all of ELPCO's work and involvement in the community. She also let us know that the new version of the city's website is now up and running, you can check it out atwww.slcgov.com. The Mayor is seeking our input on his new Public Engagement Guide, you can give your feedback by contacting Joyce at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

City Council Member Jill Remington Love spoke to us about a proposed ordinance coming before the council on ADU's (Accessory Dwelling Units), for which the Council is seeking input on.  The proposed ordinance would allow for owner-occupied ADU's, and we are all encouraged to let our City Council know our opinions. Mrs. Love also informed us of a new Volunteer Coordinator for the City!  Her name is Savannah Wake, and she can help match you up to the most relevant projects for your interests.  Savannah's contact info is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or 801-535-6202. Also, the City Council will be considering new Council Districts and School boundaries at a public hearing on February 7th, 7pm at City Hall. For more information, you can contact Council Member Love at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Officer Taylor West from the SLCPD informed us of a new website the police department is using, www.crimereports.com. The public can use the website for free, and easily track crime statistics in our neighborhoods. You'll be happy to know that District 5 has had no current spikes in crime trends.

Big news from ELPCO co-chairs Michael Cohn and Darryl High, our community council may be expanding its boundaries! The larger areas would push out in several directions, including engulfing the entire 9th & 9th Business District. The expectation is that with the expanded boundaries, ELPCO will be better equipped to handle issues, increase neighbor participation, and have the resources to complete more good deeds for our neighborhoods.  Comments and feedback are requested, and you can send them to either Michael or Darryl at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and/or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .   More information about this subject is forthcoming shortly.

A BIG thanks to our new host for our monthly meetings, the Tracy Aviary! The Visitor's Center is a beautiful location and we had the opportunity tonight to meet with the Director of the Tracy Aviary, Tim Brown, who gave us a great update on the $20 million renovation they're completing thanks to a Salt Lake County bond passed a few years ago. If you'd like to check out volunteer options (fantastic opportunity for anyone over 14 years old!) you can visit their website, www.tracyaviary.org.

Thank you all again for your participation and interest in our community! We'll look forward to seeing you next month.

Happy New Year to all of you.

Our first meeting in 2012 is Thursday, January 26.  By popular demand, Jill Love, our City Council Representative will be with us for about 30 minutes.  There is an amazing amount happening in the City and Jill wants to hear our feedback as well as explain what some of this ”tonnage” is all about.

NEW MEETING LOCATION   NEW MEETING LOCATION   NEW MEETING LOCATION

Late last year Realms of Inquiry was sold to a church group.  We have been unable to reach them to discuss continuing our meetings there, but in the process of looking for a new place, the Tracy Aviary has offered their “Education Room” as a permanent home.  We still feel the Aviary is walkable for most, especially when the weather warms and the days are longer.  The meeting location is in the brand new Visitors Center building just opened.  There are instructions on the agenda as to how to access the parking, and there will be signs there.  We are so grateful to the Aviary, plus it is a great time to see what has been done there.

Lastly, the ELPCO Board has begun discussions with our neighbors in East and West Emerson, Gilmer Park and Historic Gilmer Park about the possibility of creating a larger community council.  We have invited the residents of these areas to attend our meeting (actually, any resident of planet earth is free to join us!) and will have a brief discussion about what benefits there might be and what if any drawbacks may exist.  The overall geography is roughly boundaried by 800 South, 1700 South, 700 East and 1300 East.  This area has similar zoning, architecture, etc. but contains all of the diversity of ELPCO as it currently exists.

We hope to see all of you this Thursday.

Salt Lake City Unveils New Phone App PDF Print E-mail

Mayor Ralph Becker and the Salt Lake City Department of Community and Economic Development are pleased to announce the unveiling of the City’s new mobile phone app, Salt Lake 311.

The new tool, currently available free of charge here, allows members of the public to take an active role in their neighborhoods by requesting services from, or reporting issues to, Salt Lake City government. Initial features will allow requests for weed abatement, reporting of inoperable vehicles, construction without permits and illegal signs while expanded service request options are already in the works.

The fast, easy-to-use program walks the user through an anonymous process that requires simply choosing the type of request or complaint, verifying the address and shooting a photo of the issue. On completion, the user also gets a tracking code that allows verification of resolution.

The program, which only accepts notices on properties/incidents within City limits, integrates seamlessly with automation systems that have been in use by various departments. Salt Lake City 311 will streamline current processes, leading to easier resident access to services, reduced response times, fewer administrative tasks and overall cost savings for the City and its taxpayers.

“The Accela software used by Building Services and Licensing has a proven track record in optimizing how we provide services while also greening the process with new, paperless automation,” Mayor Becker said. “We look forward to Salt Lake 311 making the communication between our residents and City government even easier.”

See how the new system works and link to the free application at www.slcgov.com/slc311.
